Chimney Bluffs State Park
I went to Rochester for Memorial Day weekend to visit my daughter. On Sunday I hiked in Chimney Bluffs State Park, on Lake Ontario a little east of Rochester.
First I redlined the park. It's only about four and a half miles of trail, although there was some backtracking. Then I walked the beach below Chimney Bluffs, and returned by rehiking Chimney Bluffs Trail. Although there were some nice woods to walk through, the highlight of the hikes, and the main attraction of the park, is unquestionably the Chimney Bluffs, which are made of clayey dirt which has eroded into shapes somewhat resembling giant twisted stegasaurus plates. You'll have to look at the pictures to see what I mean. If you're in the area and want to see the bluffs, I would recommend parking at the East Bay Road entrance and making a loop of Bluff Trail and the beach walk. Here are the pictures. -- Cumulus NE111: 89/115 (67/67, 21/46, 1/2); Cat35: 14/39; WNH4K: 25/48; NEFF: 27/50 LT NB 2009 "I don't much care where [I get to] --" said Alice, "-- so long as I get somewhere," ... "Oh, you're sure to do that," said the Cat, "if you only walk long enough." - Lewis Carroll |

Thanks Cumulus,
Nice pictures, brings back a lot of memories. I had many a trip out there as a teenager and Boy Scout, but haven't visited in at least 25 years. Is the parked maintained at all these days? It was not in the past, in fact as Scouts we did some clean up and trail work years ago. |

I visited there once while passing through. The formations are very interesting. Thanks for the trip report and pics.

Our flesh and bone tabernacle seems transparent as glass to the beauty about us, as if truly an inseparable part of it, thrilling with the air and trees, streams and rocks, in the waves of the sun, a part of all nature, neither old nor young, sick nor well, but immortal."
